As the leading social class, they constituted the nobility, large parts of the bourgeoisie, and for a long time the majority of the urban population in Estonia, Livonia, and Courland. At the same time, the Baltic German nobility held a significant position within the Russian Empire and produced numerous ministers, military leaders, scientists, and statesmen.
